The Center for Global Education (CGE) team advances Boise State University's global recognition as a metropolitan research university. 
We lead campus-wide internationalization opportunities that enhance the global engagement of the Boise State community and beyond.

International Student Services is committed to international students’ success through advising, immigration services, programming, and outreach.

Spring 2019 Commencement was marked by international students' success and contributions to the Boise State University community. Mechanical Engineering student (B.Sc.) student, Nardos Ashenafi  (Ethiopia) was one of two Commemcement speakers, a prestigious recognition to academic achievement, extra curricular involvement and service.  Nardos will continue with doctoral studies at Boise State. She followed the steps of Boise State's first international student commencement speaker, Oceane Pelliole (Spring 2017, France).

Boise State Fostered an Inclusive Community for International Students
The Center for Global Education sponsored 29 events during AY 18-19. These programs aimed at building a stronger global community for Boise State international and domestic students. These events included Coffee and Conversation, Float on the Boise River, Downtown Stroll, Bangladeshi Night, Career Services Workshops, Tailgage and Football Game, Steelheads Game, Snow Tubing, The International Thanksgiving Celebration, and many others. 
Boise State University Celebrated 15th International Thanksgiving Dinner 
The International Thanksgiving Dinner is one of the greatest Boise State traditions. The event introduced the American holiday to international students and welcomed community members who shared the table with international students from all over the world and enjoy cultural performances. 
The Center for Global Education supports Boise State University faculty and staff members through the divisions of Global Learning Opportunities (GLO) and Academic Immigration Services.
Boise State Faculty and Staff Go Abroad  
Three Boise State University faculty and staff members received the USAC-sponsored Faculty International Development Awards (FIDA). Suzanne Lott ( Student Involvement and Leadership) will participate in the Lüneburg, Germany program. Marlee Harris ( University Health Services) will attend the San Ramon, Costa Rica program. Finally, Heidi Naylor, ( English Department) will attend the Viterbo, Italy program. The Center for Global Education made awards available to offset the cost of travel and living expenses abroad.
International Visiting Scholars Made Boise State Their Home
Boise State hosted 26 visiting scholars, who joined us to conduct research and share perspectives in their respective disciplines. During International Education Week, visiting scholars shared with the community their research progress, major findings and the cultural implications associated with transcending borders and research practices. 

Global  Learning Opportunities (GLO) offers opportunities for students to participate in study abroad, the National Student Exchange and other international opportunities. Additionally, this office supports Boise State faculty with USAC teaching abroad applications, Fulbright scholars, faculty led education abroad programs, and  fosters international collaboration in scholarly endeavors.

BizTech Launched for the 2nd Time in Taiwan 
Boise State Professor (COBE), Jack Marr and 11 students traveled in Summer 2019 for a second edition of the Boise State Global BizTech Program. The faculty-led study abroad program allows students to immerse in an academic and practical training in Taiwan. Organized by partner university Providence University (Taichung, Taiwan), BizTech involves one month of preparation in Chinese culture and language and one month of internship at several Taipei-based companies. 
Increased Student Involvement in Studying Abroad
302 Boise State studied abroad this past year, through various programs and exchanges opportunities. Students who returned from a study abroad experience had multiple opportunities for sharing with the rest of the Boise State community their experience stuyding abroad and living immersed in another culture. The photos below are the winners of Annual Photo Contest (Fall 2018), which was sponsored by the Center for Global Education. 
Boise State Students Received National Scholarships for  Study Abroad

Six Boise State students were awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for their Summer 2019 and Fall 2019 study abroad plans.
The Gilman Scholarship is a competitive national scholarship aimed to remove the financial constraints from study abroad and to allow all students -regardless of ability to pay- access a study abroad experience. Gilman Scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply toward their program costs.
Receipients of Summer 2019 awards are:

  • Rhiannon Lusardi - Psychology, USAC Valencia, Spain
  • Sandra Sakanovic - Nursing, USAC San Sebastian, Spain

Fall 2019  awardees are:

  • Tatum Benjamin - Nursing, USAC Alicante, Spain
  • Linnaea Elzinga - General Business, ISEP Annecy, France
  • Eric Ramirez - Social Work, USAC Montevideo, Uruguay
  • Sierra Renteria - English, USAC Seoul, South Korea

In addition, Sierra Renteria was also awarded the Freeman Award for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) scholarship, an award that enables students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.

The Intensive English Program provides small class and individualized instruction for English learners. The IEP serves students who join Boise State for academic studies, for the sole purpose of learning English and for thematic short-term programs. 
IEP Awarded TESOL Cerficates
27 students received the  certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). The program is designed for individuals exploring the field of teaching English (ESL, TESOL, TEFL) as a future career opportunity. The 120-hour program combines online and face-to-face instruction. Upon receiving the certificate, alumni have secured teaching positions in the U.S., Taiwan, South Korea, China, Rwanda and Mexico.
Learning English Through Service
The IEP has traditionally been a service hub. This year, IEP students served as conversation partners to Boise State students who are learning Korean language. They also assisted elder refugees who wish to learn and improve their English through the Boise State Project SHINE. Conversely, IEP hosted more than 1,200 of volunteer hours from Boise State University students and community members. 
Boise State engages in international outreach through International Admissions, the Intensive English Program and the Assistant Provost. These activities are focused on international student recruitment, alumni engagement and partnership development
Boise State Covered 17 Countries in International Student Recruitment Efforts
Boise State was involved in recruitment events in 17 countries, which were organized by EducationUSA and partner universities. These activities took place in Africa (1 country), the Americas (4 countries), Asia (10 countries) and Europe (2 countries).
Boise State Hosted First International Alumni Event
In the context of  international student recruitment travels, Boise State hosted for the first time an international alumni event in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The activity was attended by American and Slovenian alumni who either earned a Boise State degree or spent time at Boise State as exchange visitors.
Peace Corps Director Visited Boise State University 
Dr. Jody Olsen, Peace Corps Director visited Boise State in support of our Peace Corps Prep Program. During her visit, Dr. Olsen met with faculty members who serve as sector advisors for the Peace Corps Prep Program as well as Returned Peace Corps Volunteers from Boise State and the Boise community at large.
Boise State Contributed to New Resource for International Education Leaders
Assistant Provost, Gonzalo Bruce, Ph.D. contributed with one chapter in a recent NAFSA  publication entitled Senior International Officers. Essential Roles and Responsibilities. The book was released in May 2019 at the NAFSA Annual Conference (Washington, D.C.)
